These aren’t single letters — they’re special combinations known as Hiragana Half Sounds, or Yōon (拗音, yōon).

What Are Hiragana Half Sounds (Yōon)?

The basic Hiragana chart has 46 characters. But Japanese pronunciation also includes “contracted” or “half” sounds, formed by combining an i-row character (like き, し, or に) with a smaller や (ya), ゆ (yu), or よ (yo).

For example:

  • き (ki) + ゃ (ya) → きゃ (kya)

  • し (shi) + ゅ (yu) → しゅ (shu)

  • ち (chi) + ょ (yo) → ちょ (cho)

These characters appear as one unit, with the second character written smaller. They’re very common in Japanese words like:

  • 会社 (kaisha) – company

  • 旅館 (ryokan) – Japanese inn
