The Japan Foundation Test for Basic Japanese (JFT-Basic) is a Japanese language proficiency exam designed to assess whether non-native speakers can manage basic conversations and daily life in Japan. It plays a critical role in acquiring the Specified Skilled Worker (i) visa.
🎯 Objectives of the JFT-Basic Test
The test is based on:
- 📘 CEFR (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages)
- 📙 JF Standard for Japanese-Language Education
Its goal is to verify whether a person can handle everyday situations, engage in simple conversations, and adapt to life in Japan.
💻 Testing Method: Computer-Based Test (CBT)
The JFT-Basic is conducted entirely on computers at test centers. Candidates:

🧩 Test Structure – 4 Main Sections (Total 60 Minutes)
Note: Each section contains around 12 questions. You can review answers within a section but cannot return after moving to the next.

Purpose: Test reading ability, vocabulary knowledge, and kanji comprehension.

- Kanji Reading: Select hiragana readings of kanji
- Kanji Meaning and Usage: Interpret kanji-based vocabulary in context
2️⃣ Conversation and Expression
Purpose: Evaluate practical grammar and daily expressions.

- Expression: Choosing appropriate conversational phrases
3️⃣ Listening Comprehension
Purpose: Understand spoken Japanese in daily settings.
- Conversation: Everyday social and personal talks
- Shops/Public Places: Communication in real-life service settings
- Instructions: Listening to announcements and drills
4️⃣ Reading Comprehension
Purpose: Assess ability to read basic notices, signs, and messages.
- Comprehending Content: Read letters or local magazines
- Information Search: Find details in instructions, flyers, etc.
