What are Tenten and Maru?

Tenten (゛) – Dakuten
Tenten looks like two small dashes added to the top-right of a hiragana character. It changes a voiceless consonant into a voiced one.

• k-line → g-line: か (ka) → が (ga)

• s-line → z-line: さ (sa) → ざ (za)

• t-line → d-line: た (ta) → だ (da)

• h-line → b-line: は (ha) → ば (ba)

Maru (゜) – Handakuten
Maru is a small circle added to characters from the h-column. It changes the “h” sound into a “p” sound.

• h-line → p-line: は (ha) → ぱ (pa)

Mastering these changes is crucial because they appear in thousands of everyday Japanese words.
