Learning Japanese Hiragana is the first big step, but what happens when you encounter characters like きゃ, しゅ, or ちょ?
These aren’t single letters — they’re special combinations known as Hiragana Half Sounds, or Yōon (拗音, yōon).

Mastering Yōon is essential for reading and speaking Japanese fluently. To make this easier, we’ve built a free online learning app: the Hiragana Half Sounds Master.

What Are Hiragana Half Sounds (Yōon)?

The basic Hiragana chart has 46 characters. But Japanese pronunciation also includes “contracted” or “half” sounds, formed by combining an i-row character (like き, し, or に) with a smaller や (ya), ゆ (yu), or よ (yo).

For example:

き (ki) + ゃ (ya) → きゃ (kya)
し (shi) + ゅ (yu) → しゅ (shu)
ち (chi) + ょ (yo) → ちょ (cho)

These characters appear as one unit, with the second character written smaller. They’re very common in Japanese words like:

会社 (kaisha) – company
旅館 (ryokan) – Japanese inn
