⏱️ Study time: 4–6 minutes

それから (sorekara) means “and then” or “after that”. Use it to connect two actions in a sequence — what you did first, and what you did next. It can also add extra items in a list, like “and also”. It's one of the most useful N5 connectors for everyday storytelling.

🚀 JLPT N5 Warm-up Quiz

Q: How do you say “I ate breakfast and then went to school”?

Both A and B are correct! A uses the te‑form to connect actions, B uses それから for a clear sequence. C uses だから (therefore), which is wrong — it's not a reason.

What is それから?

それから is a conjunction that means “and then” or “after that”. It's made of それ (that) + から (from), so it literally means “from that point”. Use it to show that one action follows another in a clear time sequence.

  • Connects sentences: ものをしました。それから映画えいがました。 — I went shopping, and then I watched a movie.
  • Can follow a te‑form: あらって、それからべてください。 — Wash your hands and then eat.
  • Also used to add items: ペンとノート、それから辞書じしょ — a pen, a notebook, and also a dictionary.

⚡ それから vs そして

ConjunctionNuanceExample
それから“And then” — emphasises time order; what happened next.あさごはんをべました。それから学校がっこうきました。
I ate breakfast, and then I went to school.
そして“And” — adds information; more like a simple listing or continuation, less focus on strict sequence.かれしんせつです。そしてあたまもいいです。
He is kind, and he is also smart.

💡 At N5: それから is the safest choice when you want to tell a story in order. そして is better for adding facts or qualities about the same topic.

Common Mistakes (and Fixes)

それから学校がっこうきます。あさごはんをべました。 (Wrong order — それから introduces the next action, not the previous one.)
First event first, then それから + second event.
あさごはんをべて、それから学校がっこうきました。 (Using それから with だから meaning.)
それから means "and then", not "therefore". For reason, use だから or ですから.
学校がっこうきました。それからあさごはんをべました。 (Logical order problem — eating breakfast naturally comes before going to school.)
Keep the natural time order.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between それから and てから?

てから attaches directly to a verb (te‑form) and means "after doing ~". それから is a standalone conjunction that begins a new sentence or follows a te‑form clause. Both express sequence, but てから is more integrated into the sentence structure.

Can それから be used to add nouns without a verb?

Yes, it can add an item in a list: りんごとバナナ、それからみかん (apples, bananas, and also tangerines). It's like saying "and on top of that" or "and also".

Is それから polite?

Yes, it's neutral and can be used in both polite and casual speech. In very formal writing, you might see その後 (sono ato) instead, but それから is perfectly fine for N5 level.
