Making comparisons — “A is more ~ than B”
JLPT N5 文法 〜のほうが 解説 (比較)
⏱️ Study time: 5–7 minutes
〜のほうが (no hou ga) is the core pattern for making comparisons in Japanese. It marks the "more" side of a comparison — "A is more ~ than B". Combined with より (yori), it creates the full comparative structure: AのほうがBより〜です.
💡 Toggle furigana, hiragana, or romaji for easier reading.
〜のほうが means "~ is more" or "~ is the better one". ほう (方) means "direction" or "side", so Aのほうが literally means "A's side is more ~". It's the standard N5 pattern for expressing comparisons and preferences.
日本のほうが私の国より広いです。にほんのほうがわたしのくによりひろいです。Nihon no hou ga watashi no kuni yori hiroi desu.
Japan is wider than my country.

のほうが marks the "more" side (Aのほうが = A is more). より marks the standard of comparison (Bより = than B). They often appear together: AのほうがBより = A is more ~ than B.
Yes. When the comparison is implied or the alternative is already known, のほうが alone is fine: このほうがいいです = This one is better (than the others).
Mostly yes, but it can be used with verbs too: 日本語のほうが話せます = I can speak Japanese better (than another language). This is slightly beyond N5 but common in daily speech.
Next: より (yori) — the comparison particle.
