🚀 JLPT N5 Warm-up Quiz

Q: How do you say “Where is the toilet?” politely?

Both A and B are correct! A (どこですか) is the simplest way. B (どこにありますか) explicitly asks where something exists. C means "Where does the toilet go?" — nonsensical here.

💡 At N5: どこ is the standard form you'll use most. どちら appears in listening and polite expressions (どちらさまですか = Who are you? / May I ask who's calling?). Know both, but どこ is your everyday choice.

Common Mistakes (and Fixes)

どこきますか (missing particle).
どこへきますか / どこにきますか (need へ or に for destination).
ねこはどこにありますか (using あります for a living being).
ねこはどこにいますか (use います for animals/people).
どこからですか (ambiguous without context).
どこからましたか (clearer when asking about origin).

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between どこに and どこへ?

どこに focuses on the destination or location where something exists. どこへ emphasises the direction of movement. With きます, both are correct: どこにきますか and どこへきますか.

Can I just say どこ? without です?

Yes, in casual speech: トイレどこ? = Where's the toilet? But for polite Japanese and the JLPT, use どこですか.

When should I use どちら instead of どこ?

Use どちら in formal situations — when talking to customers, superiors, or in business settings. At N5, どこ is sufficient for most situations, but you should recognise どちら in listening.
