, ふん/ぷん, and はん are the building blocks of telling time in Japanese. marks the hour, ふん/ぷん marks the minutes, and はん means "half past". Master these and you can read any clock, schedule, or timetable in Japanese.

⚡ 〜ふん / ぷん — Minutes

The reading of ふん/ぷん changes depending on the number it follows. ふん follows most numbers; ぷん follows 1, 3, 6, 8, 10, and the question word なん.

💡 Pattern: ふん → ぷん after 1 (いっ), 3 (さん), 6 (ろく), 8 (はち), 10 (じゅう), and なん. The sound change makes them easier to pronounce.

はん is placed directly after the hour to mean "half past". It replaces the need to say 30 minutes — both are correct, but はん is shorter and more common in everyday speech.
