〜ましょうか (mashou ka) is the polite way to offer help or suggest doing something together. Add it to the verb stem to say "Shall I do ~?" or "Shall we do ~?" — one of the most useful patterns for daily life in Japan.

🚀 JLPT N5 Warm-up Quiz

Q: How do you politely offer to carry someone's bag?

Answer: C (ちましょうか). ましょうか is the polite offer "Shall I carry your bag?" A is simply "Will you carry the bag?" B is "Let's carry the bag" (not an offer).

Quick Summary

Meaning
Shall I ~? / Shall we ~? (offer / soft suggestion)
Pattern
Verb stem + ましょうか
Example
手伝てつだいましょうか。てつだいましょうか。Tetsudaimashou ka.

📝 Core Pattern

Offer (speaker does): Verb stem + ましょうか
Suggestion (group activity): Verb stem + ましょうか (softer than ましょう)
Stem reminder: Remove ます from the polite form. きます → き + ましょうか
⚠️ ましょうか always includes the speaker in the action (either "I do it for you" or "let's do it together").

What is 〜ましょうか?

〜ましょうか is the polite volitional form combined with the question particle か. It is used to offer assistance or gently suggest an activity involving the speaker. The nuance is "Shall I do it for you?" or "How about we do it?"

  • When you want to help someone, use ましょうか to offer.
  • When suggesting a group action, it's softer than the direct "let's" (ましょう).
  • The subject is often "I" (when offering) or "we" (when suggesting).

Common Mistakes (and Fixes)

Using ますか to offer → 手伝てつだいますか (means "Will you help?" not "Shall I help?")
手伝てつだいましょうか (Shall I help?)
かえるましょうか (wrong stem for godan verb)
かえりましょうか (stem is 帰り, not 帰る)
Using ましょうか for a strong order (too soft).
Use てください for direct requests, or ましょう for a firmer "let's".

JLPT N5 Practice Questions

Score: 0 / 3

1. “Shall I open the door?” Choose the correct offer.

2. ましょうか is __________ than ましょう.

3. What is the ましょうか form of する?

🎯 JLPT N5 tip: ましょうか is frequently tested in the listening section — you'll hear someone offering help or suggesting an activity. If the speaker uses ましょうか, they are being considerate and leaving the decision to the listener. Distinguish it from the firmer ましょう.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can ましょうか be used for "shall we"?

Yes. When the context is a group activity, it's a gentle suggestion. そろそろましょうか = Shall we leave soon?

What's the negative of ましょうか?

There is no direct negative volitional form. To say "Shall I not do it?" use 〜ないでおきましょうか (very advanced, beyond N5). At N5 level, you don't need a negative offer pattern.

Is ましょうか used with adjectives?

No. ましょうか only attaches to verbs. For adjectives, you cannot offer "Shall I be quiet?" with this pattern. Use other constructions.
