What is と?

is a multi‑function particle. At the JLPT N5 level, you will see it used in three distinct ways:

  • Complete listing — connects two nouns meaning “A and B” (exhaustive).
  • Accompaniment — shows who you do an action with (“with someone”).
  • Quotation — marks the content of speech or thought before verbs like う (say) or おもう (think).

Frequently Asked Questions

When should I use と instead of や?

Use と when listing all items, and や when giving examples from a larger group. “I like dogs and cats (just those two)” → と; “I like dogs, cats, etc.” → や.

Can と be used with verbs other than 言う and 思う?

Yes, と is the standard quotative particle and can be used with any verb of communication or thought, such as く (write), く (hear), こたえる (answer).

Does the quoted phrase change form before と?

It stays in its plain form exactly as it would be said/thought. For polite speech, the quoting verb itself can be polite (言いました) while the quote remains plain.
