A は B ではありません is the polite negative form of A は B です. Use it to deny, correct, or politely say something is not the case. The contracted form じゃありません is equally common in conversation.

What is A は B ではありません?

A は B ではありません is the polite negative form of the basic sentence pattern. It negates the predicate (B) and says that topic A is not B. The topic marker は (pronounced わ) sets what we're talking about, and ではありません is the negative of です.

Use it to correct misconceptions politely.
The word order remains Topic + は + Noun + ではありません.
じゃありません is a colloquial contraction that is still polite.

私わたしは日本人にほんじんではありません。わたしはにほんじんではありません。Watashi wa Nihonjin dewa arimasen.
I am not Japanese. (polite)

✕ 私わたしは学生がくせいじゃないです。

✓ 私わたしは学生がくせいじゃありません。 (fully polite; じゃないです mixes plain negative with polite です)

✕ 彼かれは会社員かいしゃいんでわありません。

✓ 彼かれは会社員かいしゃいんではありません。 (では is written with は, not わ)

✕ 私わたしは学生がくせいません。

✓ 私わたしは学生がくせいではありません。 (ません is for verbs only)

What's the difference between ではありません and じゃありません?

じゃありません is simply a contraction of ではありません (では → じゃ). Both are polite; ではありません is more formal (speeches, business), while じゃありません is common in everyday polite conversation.

Can I use ません instead of ではありません?

No. ません is the negative verb ending (for actions). ではありません is for nouns and na‑adjectives. "学生ません" is wrong.

How do I make this pattern past tense?
