What does ~てもいい / ~てもいいですか mean?

This grammar pattern asks and grants permission. "Is it okay if I ~?" / "May I ~?" / "You may ~". It's extremely common in everyday Japanese.

  • ~てもいいですか → polite way to ask permission.
  • ~てもいい → casual: "it's okay to ~" (often used when giving permission).
  • For nouns, use ~でもいい. Example: 鉛筆えんぴつでもいいですか。えんぴつでもいいですか。Enpitsu demo ii desu ka.

Positive response: はい、いいですよ (Sure, it's fine). Negative: いいえ、だめです (No, you can't) or ~してはいけません.
