🚀 JLPT N5 Warm-up Quiz

Q: How do you say “I think she is a student” politely?

Answer: B (学生だと思います). Before と, you must use the plain form: 学生だ (not 学生です). A uses the polite form before と, which is ungrammatical. C drops だ entirely, which is incomplete for a noun.

What is 〜と思います?

〜と思います means "I think that ~". The particle と is a quotation marker — it marks the clause before it as what you are thinking. 思います is the polite form of 思う (to think).

  • The clause before と must be in the plain (casual) form.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I use です before と思います?

と is a quotation particle — it marks the exact content of your thought. Thoughts are internal and casual, so the quoted clause must be in the plain form. です is for the outer, polite layer of speech.

Do i‑adjectives need だ before と思います?

No. i‑adjectives are already in their plain form (おいしい). Adding だ makes it ungrammatical: おいしいだと思います ✕ → おいしいと思います ✓.

Can I use と思います for other people's thoughts?

Yes, but it sounds presumptuous. For others, it's more natural to use と思っている or と思った. At N5, と思います is safest for your own thoughts.
