〜つ / 〜人 / 〜枚 / 〜本 / 〜杯 — full 1–10 tables
JLPT N5 文法 助数詞 (つ・人・枚・本・杯)
⏱️ Study time: 10–14 minutes
Japanese uses counter words (助数詞) to count different types of objects. You can't just say "three" — you must say "three small things" (三つ), "three people" (三人), or "three flat objects" (三枚). This lesson gives you the complete 1–10 tables for the five essential N5 counters.
The 〜つ counter is the native Japanese counting system. It's used for small, general items that don't have a specific counter — apples, plates, problems, ideas. It only goes up to 10.
| Number | Japanese | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 一つ | ひとつ |
| 2 | 二つ | ふたつ |
| 3 | 三つ | みっつ |
| 4 | 四つ | よっつ |
| 5 | 五つ | いつつ |
| 6 | 六つ | むっつ |
| 7 | 七つ | ななつ |
| 8 | 八つ | やっつ |
| 9 | 九つ | ここのつ |
| 10 | 十 | とお |
💡 Note: 10 is just とお — it does not take つ. These are the original Japanese numbers and must be memorised individually.
The counter for people is 人, but "one person" and "two people" use the native Japanese readings ひとり and ふたり. From 3 onwards, the Chinese readings are used.
| Number | Japanese | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| 1 person | 一人 | ひとり |
| 2 people | 二人 | ふたり |
| 3 people | 三人 | さんにん |
| 4 people | 四人 | よにん |
| 5 people | 五人 | ごにん |
| 6 people | 六人 | ろくにん |
| 7 people | 七人 | しちにん / ななにん |
| 8 people | 八人 | はちにん |
| 9 people | 九人 | きゅうにん / くにん |
| 10 people | 十人 | じゅうにん |
Use 枚 for thin, flat objects: paper, tickets, shirts, plates, CDs, photographs. This counter is completely regular — no sound changes.
| Number | Japanese | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 一枚 | いちまい |
| 2 | 二枚 | にまい |
| 3 | 三枚 | さんまい |
| 4 | 四枚 | よんまい |
| 5 | 五枚 | ごまい |
| 6 | 六枚 | ろくまい |
| 7 | 七枚 | ななまい |
| 8 | 八枚 | はちまい |
| 9 | 九枚 | きゅうまい |
| 10 | 十枚 | じゅうまい |
Use 本 for long, cylindrical objects: bottles, pens, pencils, umbrellas, trees, roads, rivers. The reading changes with the number (ほん → ぼん → ぽん).
| Number | Japanese | Reading |
|---|---|---|
After 2, 4, 5, 7, 9 → ほん.
Use 杯 for cups, glasses, bowls, and anything you drink or eat from. Follows the same sound change pattern as 本 (はい → ばい → ぱい).
| Number | Japanese | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 一杯 | いっぱい |
| 2 | 二杯 | にはい |
| 3 | 三杯 | さんばい |
| 4 | 四杯 | よんはい |
| 5 | 五杯 | ごはい |
| 6 | 六杯 | ろっぱい |
| 7 | 七杯 | ななはい |
| 8 | 八杯 | はっぱい |
| 9 | 九杯 | きゅうはい |
| 10 | 十杯 | じゅっぱい |

| Japanese | Reading | Type | English Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| 一つ | ひとつ | Counter | one (general) |
| 一人 | ひとり | Counter | one person |
| 一枚 | いちまい | Counter | one flat object |
| 一本 | いっぽん | Counter | one long object |
| 一杯 | いっぱい | Counter | one cup/glass |
| 何 | なん | Prefix | what / how many |
They use the native Japanese number readings (ひと, ふた) instead of the Chinese‑derived readings (いち, に). This is a remnant of older Japanese. For 3 and above, the Chinese readings are used (さんにん, よにん…).
〜つ is the native Japanese counter (1–10). 〜個 is the Chinese‑derived counter and can be used for numbers above 10. Both mean the same thing for small numbers: 三つ = 三個 (さんこ) = three items.
Use 何 + counter: 何人 (なんにん) = how many people?, 何枚 (なんまい) = how many sheets?, 何本 (なんぼん) = how many long objects?, 何杯 (なんばい) = how many cups?, いくつ = how many? (general).
