〜がありますか and 〜がいますか are the polite ways to ask "is there a ~?" and "do you have a ~?" ありますか is for inanimate objects and abstract things; いますか is for living beings. These are among the most useful question patterns in daily Japanese.

What are ありますか / いますか?

〜がありますか and 〜がいますか are the polite question forms of the existence verbs ある and いる. Use ありますか for inanimate objects, plants, events, and abstract concepts. Use いますか for people, animals, and insects.

ありますか = Is there a ~? / Do you have a ~? (things, plants, events, ideas)
いますか = Is there a ~? / Do you have a ~? (people, animals, insects)
Add に for location: 冷蔵庫れいぞうこに何なにがありますか = What is in the fridge?

✅ 質問 is an abstract noun, so ありますか is used.

⚡ ありますか vs いますか — The Distinction

⚠️ JLPT Trap: Plants and trees use ありますか, not いますか. Even though they are alive biologically, grammatically they are treated as inanimate. 公園こうえんに桜さくらがありますか = Is there a cherry tree in the park?

Common Mistakes (and Fixes)

✕ 猫ねこがありますか。

✓ 猫ねこがいますか。 (Cats are living beings — use います.)

✕ ペンをありますか。

✓ ペンがありますか。 (The subject marker is が, not を — the thing that exists takes が.)

✕ 桜さくらがいますか。

✓ 桜さくらがありますか。 (Plants, even though alive, use あります.)
