JLPT N5 文法 〜ませんか 解説 (勧誘)
⏱️ Study time: 4–6 minutes
〜ませんか (masen ka) is the standard polite way to invite someone to do something. Add it to the verb stem to say “Won't you join me?” or “Would you like to go?” — a friendly, open invitation that leaves the decision to the listener.

〜ませんか is the polite negative question form used to invite someone. It is not a literal negative question — it's the standard, friendly way to extend an invitation in Japanese. The nuance is “Won't you do ~ with me?” or “Would you like to do ~?”

No. While the form is technically a negative question, it is used exclusively as an invitation. It means “Would you like to do ~?” not “Are you not doing ~?”.
ませんか invites the listener to join the speaker in an activity (the speaker wants a yes). ましょうか is a softer suggestion that asks for the listener's opinion first — it leaves more room for refusal.
No. ませんか attaches only to verb stems. For adjectives, you cannot form an invitation directly.
