Every Japanese verb belongs to one of three groups. Knowing which group a verb belongs to is the key to all conjugation โ€” ใพใ™ form, ใฆ form, negative, past, and everything else. This guide teaches you how to identify verb groups at a glance, avoid the "fake ichidan" traps, and conjugate every verb correctly.

๐Ÿš€ JLPT N5 Warm-up Quiz

Q: What is the stem (for ใพใ™ form) of the verb ๆ›ธใ‹ใ (to write)?

Answer: B (ๆ›ธใ). ๆ›ธใ‹ใ is a Group 1 (godan) verb. Its stem changes the final โ€‘ใ to โ€‘ใ โ†’ ๆ›ธใ‹ใ. Group 1 verbs shift through the five vowel rows (aโ€‘iโ€‘uโ€‘eโ€‘o), which is why they're called "godan" (fiveโ€‘level).

Group 1 โ€” Godan Verbs (uโ€‘verbs)

Godan means "five levels". The final sound of the verb changes across all five vowel rows (aโ€‘iโ€‘uโ€‘eโ€‘o) depending on the conjugation. Their dictionary form always ends in a โ€‘u sound: โ€‘ใ, โ€‘ใ, โ€‘ใ™, โ€‘ใค, โ€‘ใฌ, โ€‘ใถ, โ€‘ใ‚€, โ€‘ใ‚‹, or โ€‘ใ†.

to speak
Stem: ่ฉฑใฏใชใ—
่ฒทใ‹ใ† (kau)
to buy
Stem: ่ฒทใ‹ใ„

The stem rule is: change the final โ€‘u to the corresponding โ€‘i row sound. โ€‘ใ โ†’ โ€‘ใ, โ€‘ใ‚€ โ†’ โ€‘ใฟ, โ€‘ใ™ โ†’ โ€‘ใ—, โ€‘ใ† โ†’ โ€‘ใ„, โ€‘ใ‚‹ โ†’ โ€‘ใ‚Š, etc.

Group 2 โ€” Ichidan Verbs (ruโ€‘verbs)

Ichidan means "one level". The stem stays the same โ€” you simply drop the final ใ‚‹ for any conjugation. Nearly all ichidan verbs end in โ€‘iru or โ€‘eru, but not all verbs ending in โ€‘iru/โ€‘eru are ichidan (some are godan traps).

้ฃŸใŸในใ‚‹ (taberu)

Stem: ่ตทใŠใ
ๅฏใญใ‚‹ (neru)

Stem: ๅฏใญ

The stem rule is: simply drop ใ‚‹. That's it โ€” just one shape for all conjugations.

Irregular Verbs โ€” ใ™ใ‚‹ & ๆฅใใ‚‹

There are exactly two irregular verbs in modern Japanese. They must be memorised because their stems don't follow normal rules.

VerbDictionaryStem (ใพใ™)Polite Form

๐Ÿ’ก Memory tip: Almost all godan verbs whose dictionary form has two or more kana before the final ใ‚‹ (e.g., ใ‹ใˆ.ใ‚‹, ใฏใ„.ใ‚‹, ใฏใ—.ใ‚‹) are Group 1. Verbs with one kana before ใ‚‹ (e.g., ่ฆ‹ใฟใ‚‹, ๅฏใญใ‚‹) are usually Group 2 โ€” but ๅˆ‡ใใ‚‹ and ็ทดใญใ‚‹ are the main exceptions to that pattern.

JLPT N5 Practice Questions

Score: 0 / 3

1. Which group is ้ฃŸใŸในใ‚‹ (taberu)?

2. Which verb is an irregular "fake ichidan" (godan)?

3. What is the ใพใ›ใ‚“ form of ่ฒทใ‹ใ† (to buy)?

๐ŸŽฏ JLPT N5 tip: Verb group identification is tested in almost every question involving conjugation. If you can't tell a verb's group, you can't conjugate it correctly. Memorise the complete fake ichidan list above โ€” these traps appear every year and are the most common source of conjugation errors.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is ๅธฐใ‹ใˆใ‚‹ Group 1 and not Group 2?

Despite ending in โ€‘eru, ๅธฐใ‹ใˆใ‚‹ is historically a godan verb. Its stem changes across all five vowels (ๅธฐใ‹ใˆใ‚‰ใƒปๅธฐใ‹ใˆใ‚Šใƒปๅธฐใ‹ใˆใ‚‹ใƒปๅธฐใ‹ใˆใ‚Œใƒปๅธฐใ‹ใˆใ‚ใ†), which proves it's godan. It's on the fake ichidan list you must memorise.

Are there really only two irregular verbs?

Yes โ€” ใ™ใ‚‹ and ๆฅใใ‚‹. However, ่กŒใ„ใ (iku) has an irregular ใฆ form (่กŒใ„ใฃใฆ, not ใ„ใ„ใฆ). Some textbooks call this a "semiโ€‘irregular", but it's still Group 1 for all other conjugations.

How can I tell if a new verb ending in โ€‘iru/โ€‘eru is Group 1 or 2?

Check the complete fake ichidan list above. If the verb isn't there, it's likely Group 2. The pattern: if two or more kana come before ใ‚‹ (e.g., ใ‹ใˆ.ใ‚‹), it's probably Group 1. When in doubt, look it up.
