This grammar pattern asks and grants permission. "Is it okay if I ~?" / "May I ~?" / "You may ~". It's extremely common in everyday Japanese.
許可を求めるときに使います。 きょかをもとめるときにつかいます。 Kyoka o motomeru toki ni tsukaimasu.
Positive response: はい、いいですよ (Sure, it's fine). Negative: いいえ、だめです (No, you can't) or ~してはいけません.
~てもいい: te mo i i
~てもいいですか: te mo i i de su ka
開けてもいいですか / 食べてもいい? / 来てもいい
Reply: はい、いいですよ。 or ええ、どうぞ。
Often heard at tourist spots.
Casual version omits ですか. Rising intonation makes it a question.
These two patterns are opposites. Learning them together makes it easier to remember both.

🔍 Never put もいい directly after ます. Always て-form first.
🔍 食べちゃ = prohibition (食べちゃいけない), 食べても = permission (食べてもいい). Don't mix them.
In the listening section, a question like this often appears:
「窓を開けてもいいですか」
The answer will be either 「はい、どうぞ」 or 「すみません、ちょっと…」. Knowing the pattern instantly tells you what's being asked.
