💡 Switch to Hiragana only or Rōmaji if you're just starting out.

~くします: ku shi masu
~にします: ni shi masu
きれいにします / 静かにします / 明るくします
Used when tidying up. The な-adjective きれい takes にします.
Used with devices. The い-adjective 大きい drops い → 大きくします.
Used when ordering. The noun コーヒー takes にします.
Used as a promise. The な-adjective 静か takes にします.
The い-adjective 明るい drops い → 明るくします.
A common N5 confusion: when to use にします (make it / decide) and になります (it becomes). The key is whether you are causing the change or it happens naturally.
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| にします | Someone makes it / decides | コーヒーにします。 I'll have coffee. (choice) |
| になります | It becomes (natural/result) | コーヒーがさめました → さめたコーヒーになります The coffee got cold. (result) |
💡 Exam tip: If you see a person making a decision or an action → にします.
🔍 Why this mistake? Learners see “い” at the end of きれい and wrongly apply the い‑adjective rule. Always check: きれい is a な‑adjective despite the ending.
🔍 Many students over‑generalize the ~くします pattern. Remember: only true い‑adjectives take く; な‑adjectives always take に.
🔍 The opposite error: using に for a true い‑adjective. Make sure you know which adjectives are い‑type (usually end in い, but verify).
In the listening section, pay close attention to the sound right before します:
Many N5 questions test exactly this difference — knowing your い vs. な adjectives is the key!
👉 Quick check: きれい ends in い but is a な-adjective (exception!). Always double-check adjective type.
1. "I'll make the room bright."
(明るいあかるいakarui = bright, い-adj)
A. 部屋を明るくします。へやをあかるくします。Heya o akaruku shimasu.
B. 部屋を明るいにします。へやをあかるいにします。Heya o akarui ni shimasu.
2. "I'll have tea."
(紅茶こうちゃkōcha = tea, noun)
A. 紅茶くします。こうちゃくします。Kōchaku shimasu.
B. 紅茶にします。こうちゃにします。Kōcha ni shimasu.
3. Choose the correct sentence.
(大きいおおきいōkii = big, い-adj)
A. 大きくします。おおきくします。Ōkiku shimasu.
B. 大きにします。おおきにします。Ōki ni shimasu.
4. "I'll be quiet."
(静かしずかshizuka = quiet, な-adj)
A. 静かくします。しずかくします。Shizukaku shimasu.
B. 静かにします。しずかにします。Shizuka ni shimasu.

It means "make it ~" or "decide on ~" – used to express intentional change or a choice.
~くします is used with い-adjectives (e.g., 大きくします). ~にします is used with な-adjectives and nouns (e.g., 静かにします、コーヒーにします).
Simply add にします after a noun or な-adjective. Example: 紅茶にします (I'll have tea). For objects of change, use を: 部屋をきれいにします (I'll make the room clean).
It means "I'll make it clean / I'll clean it." きれい is a な-adjective, so きれいにします is the correct form.
Use くします with い-adjectives (remove い, add くします). Use にします with な-adjectives and nouns (attach にします).
きれい is a な-adjective even though it ends in い. This is a common trap! It takes にします: きれいにします (not きれくします).
Sure! 暑い → 暑くします (make it hot), 暗い → 暗くします (make it dark), 狭い → 狭くします (make it narrow). All drop the final い and add くします.

~くなります / ~になります (become ~)
