Become ~ / Get ~ / Turn into ~ – Express natural changes
JLPT N5 文法 ~くなります / ~になります 解説
Master ~くなります / ~になります in 5 minutes. This guide shows you how to say "become ~" in Japanese, with real JLPT N5 examples and traps to avoid.
Q1: You want to say "The room became clean." Which is correct?
A. 部屋をきれいにしました
B. 部屋がきれいになりました
💡 Switch to Hiragana only or Rōmaji if you're just starting out.
These patterns express a natural change or a result — something becomes a certain state, often without a direct person doing the action.
日常会話でも非常によく使います。 にちじょうかいわでもひじょうによくつかいます。 Nichijō kaiwa demo hijō ni yoku tsukaimasu.
This grammar is the intransitive counterpart of ~くします / ~にします. Learn the difference to master both JLPT N5 patterns.
~くなります: ku na ri masu
~になります: ni na ri masu
きれいになります / 静かになります / 明るくなります
Notice the particle が marks the subject that undergoes change. No person is doing the cleaning — it just became clean.
The い-adjective 大きい drops い → 大きくなります.
Nouns take になります to express a change in state or time.
Often used to describe a change in atmosphere or condition.
Again, が marks the subject. Nobody turned on the light — we just describe the result.
These two patterns are tested together on the JLPT N5. The difference is who causes the change.
| Pattern | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| になります | Became (natural change, no direct actor) | 部屋がきれいになりました。 The room became clean. (just happened) |
| にします | Made it (someone did it on purpose) | 部屋をきれいにしました。 (I) made the room clean. |
💡 Exam tip: If you see が → probably ~なります. If you see を → probably ~します. But always check the meaning!
→ Need the "make it" version? See full lesson on ~くします / ~にします.
🔍 Why? Learners often mix up ~します (transitive) and ~なります (intransitive) particles. Remember: が + なります, を + します.
🔍 Same rule as ~くします: い-adjectives must drop い before adding くなります.
The test often shows two sentences and asks you to pick the correct particle:
Look at the verb ending: なります = が, します = を. This rule alone saves you points on multiple questions.
1. "The room became dark."
(暗いくらいkurai = dark, い-adj)
A. 部屋が暗いになりました。
B. 部屋が暗くなりました。
2. "I became well." (元気 = well, な-adj)
A. 元気になりました。
B. 元気くしました。
3. Choose the natural sentence.
A. 音が大きくなりました。
B. 音を大きくしました。

It means "become ~" or "get ~" — used to describe a natural change of state, like weather, time, or conditions.
~になります is "become" (natural result), while ~にします is "make it / decide" (intentional action). The particles also differ: が + なります, を + します.
Remove the final い and add くなります. Examples: 暑い → 暑くなります, 大きい → 大きくなります.
きれい is a な-adjective, so it takes になります: きれいになります (not きれくなります).
Yes, for example 先生になります (become a teacher). But for adjectives about people (like 上手), use に: 日本語が上手になりました (I became good at Japanese).
Now review the transitive counterpart:
~くします / ~にします (make it ~)
