Was not / Were not — Past negative copula & adjectives
JLPT N5 文法 じゃなかった・くありませんでした 解説
Master じゃなかった / くありませんでした in 5 minutes. Learn to say "it was not", "I was not" and the special rules for い-adjective past negative – a key JLPT N5 point.
Q1: "It was not delicious." (past negative) Which is correct?
A. おいしくなかったです
B. おいしいじゃなかったです
💡 Switch to Hiragana only or Rōmaji if you're just starting out.
These are the past negative forms of です/だ. They mean "was not" or "were not". For い-adjectives, the negative past is formed by changing い→くない→くなかった.
過去の否定を覚えましょう。 かこのひていをおぼえましょう。 Kako no hitei o oboemashou.
じゃなかった: ja na ka tta (small っ pause)
じゃありませんでした: ja a ri ma se n de shi ta
高くなかったです / 静かじゃなかった / 犬じゃありませんでした
Casual: 犬じゃなかった.
Polite: 静かじゃありませんでした.
Casual: 高くなかった.
The JLPT N5 often tests the transition from じゃない/くない to じゃなかった/くなかった.
| Word Type | Present Neg. (polite) | Past Neg. (polite) |
|---|---|---|
| Noun | 犬じゃありません | 犬じゃありませんでした |
| な-adj | 静かじゃありません | 静かじゃありませんでした |
| い-adj | 高くないです | 高くなかったです |
💡 Exam tip: "おいしいじゃなかった" is never correct. い-adjectives must change internally.
🔍 Same rule as present negative: い-adjectives never attach じゃない/じゃなかった directly.
🔍 The reverse mistake: using くなくない/くなかった for な-adjectives. Know your adjective type.
Questions often ask you to choose the correct past negative form:
「きのうのパーティーは ( )。」
A. 楽しいじゃなかった
B. 楽しくなかった
Answer: B. If the word is an い-adjective, eliminate any option with じゃなかった.
1. "It was not a cat." (猫 = cat)
A. 猫じゃなかった
B. 猫くなかった
2. "It was not quiet." (静か = quiet, な-adj)
A. 静かじゃありませんでした
B. 静かくなかったです
3. "It was not expensive." (高い = expensive, い-adj)
A. 高いじゃなかった
B. 高くなかった

Add じゃなかった (casual) or じゃありませんでした (polite) directly after the noun: 先生じゃなかった (was not a teacher).
Yes. おいしくなかった is the casual form; add です for politeness. Both are correct in appropriate contexts.
They mean the same, but ではありませんでした is slightly more formal. N5 accepts both.
Step 1: い → くない (present negative). Step 2: くない → くなかった (past negative). Example: 高い → 高くない → 高くなかった(です).
Now combine negative and past for verbs:
~ませんでした (did not do)
